The easiest pumpkin pie ever!

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving season is the huge proliferation of food that appears around this time! I love Thanksgiving related desserts, and pumpkin pie is a classic that is a seasonal staple.

I have to admit, pumpkin pie is not my favorite pie—apple pie takes the cake (or the pie?) for me—but I think that it embodies the Thanksgiving spirit more than any other food for me.

My Design Process

This pumpkin pie is really simple and is only made of three parts: the base, the pie top, and the little dollop of whipped cream.

I love this design because simple and easy elements come together to create the unmistakable pie shape—the crimping on pie crusts become shell stitches around the edge, and the whipped cream is a long tube coiled up into a dollop shape.

This design can be adapted to any other pie, or you can even make the top and bottom the same color to become a double pie crust for an apple pie or something similar!

Shell stitch: skip the next two stitches, and double crochet into the third stitch. Work four more double crochets into the same stitch, for a total of five double crochet stitches. Skip two stitches and slip stitch into the third stitch. Repeat.

Technical Notes:

  • Crochet in continuous rounds unless otherwise specified
  • When filling with polyester stuffing, pull apart each large chunk into many smaller chunks. This ensures an even distribution of firmness.
  • To avoid large holes in the crochet fabric, increase tension until the holes cannot be seen, or choose a crochet hook a size down.
  • Stuff the head and the body firmly at the openings so that the neck is stable upon completion.

  • Invisible finish off. Stuff the pie bottom and then sew the top into the bottom, stuffing as you go. Sew the edges of the filling into the seam between the last round of single crochet stitches and shell stitches (that way the stitches won’t show!).

WHIPPED CREAM (white sport weight yarn)

  • Round 1 sc4 in MR (4 sts)
  • Round 2-26 (25 rnds) sc all around (4 sts)
  • This forms a long tube. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Curl the tube and sew it in a spiral form.

ASSEMBLY

  1. Insert 4.0mm safety eyes between rounds 5 and 6 of the filling, with 3 stitches in between.
  2. Sew a mouth between rounds 6 and 7 of the filling, directly between the eyes. Use black embroidery thread and make a v shape with two stitches.
  3. Sew the whipped cream spiral onto the filling, between rounds 1 and 7. Alternatively, use hot glue to secure.
