Easy Crochet Bunny Design

I think some of the most adorable animals out there are bunnies because of their big floppy ears and round shape. I made Bunbun with all these things in mind to make him as cute and squishy as possible! I particularly wanted his legs to be on the short side to emphasize a stubby look, and embroidered eyes to create a smiling effect.

This easy crochet bunny is made out of six separate pieces that are all sewn together at the end. As per usual for amigurumi, the legs are made first and then crocheted together to form the body, so that the lower half of the bunny is all in one piece.

This pattern only uses single crochet stitches, so it’s perfect for any beginners trying to get the hang of making amigurumi and creating simple but cute animals. It is also endlessly customizable with any color you wish your bunny to be, and you can choose whether you want to opt for more conventional safety eyes in lieu of the embroidery or not.

I used cotton sport weight yarn for the easy crochet bunny, which gives a nice stitch definition while not being difficult to work with. If you want your bunny to be larger, it’s entirely possible to use worsted weight or any other yarn to size it up, and vice versa.

Technical Notes:

  • Crochet in continuous spiral rounds (not joined rounds), and use a stitch marker or piece of yarn to keep track of the last stitch in each round.
  • When filling with polyester stuffing, pull apart each large chunk into many smaller chunks. This ensures an even distribution of firmness within the amigurumi.
  • Stuff the head and the body firmly at the openings so that the neck is stable upon completion.
  • To avoid large holes in the crochet fabric, increase tension until the holes cannot be seen, or choose a crochet hook a size down.
  • Use sewing pins to secure limbs of the amigurumi before you sew them.

Finish off, leaving a short tail (around 12 inches). Do not stuff and flatten the ear. Fold it in half lengthwise, and sew across the base using the running stitch. Make another one in the same way.

Tail:

  1. Wrap white yarn around two fingers 30-40 times.
  2. Wrap the tail end of the yarn around the middle of the bundle securely, and then cut a long tail (around 18 inches) and use a crochet hook to pull it under the yarn
  3. Cut all the loops.
  4. Trim all pieces of yarn until they form a uniform ball shape. Tail complete.

Assembly:

  1. Embroider eyes between the 14th and 15th rows, around the middle of the head. The eye is 3 stitches wide, and there are 5 stitches between the two eyes. Make eyelashes with two small stitches coming off the far ends of the eyes.
  2. Embroider the nose between the eyes with pink embroidery thread.
  3. Stitch the head and body together.
  4. Stitch the ears at the 4th row on either side of the top of the head.
  5. Stitch the white belly onto the upper middle of the body, from the 4th to 10th row (counting from the top of the body).
  6. Stitch the arms at the seam between the head and body.
  7. Stitch the tail to the back of the body, at the 13th row (counting from top of body). Weave in all the ends, and congratulations! Your easy crochet bunny is done!
