This amigurumi little prince is my take on the famous character from Saint-Exupéry’s children’s book, The Little Prince (or Le Petit Prince in the original French!). He’s perfect as a cuddly friend to boys and girls alike and if you want to change it up a bit, his hair and jacket colors can be switched with simple yarn color swaps. I’ll tell you about my design process first, but if you’re in a hurry you can scroll to the end for the free pattern!

The Inspiration

The Little Prince has long been one of my favorite works of fiction; its story is utterly unique and manages to be both thought provoking and poignant at the same time. In honor of the novel, I decided to create an amigurumi little prince. He has chibi proportions, emphasizing an adorable child-like quality which I felt like was a great subtle nod to the theme of innocence in the book! His outfit is inspired by the famous drawings made by St-Exupéry himself of the little prince standing on his home asteroid B-612:

The Design

The amigurumi little prince is made up of many individual pieces which are all sewn together later. His hair is the most tricky part, because it involves a technique that isn’t often used in crochet, but I think it’s one of the easier and more rewarding ways to create amigurumi hair. The amigurumi little prince’s outfit is made up of a little removable green jacket, as well as a tiny red bowtie and belt which are both sewn on to the whole ensemble.

Technical Notes:

  • Crochet in continuous spiral rounds (not joined rounds), and use a stitch marker or piece of yarn to keep track of the last stitch in each round.
  • When filling with polyester stuffing, pull apart each large chunk into many smaller chunks. This ensures an even distribution of firmness within the amigurumi.
  • Stuff the head and the body firmly at the openings so that the neck is stable upon completion.
  • To avoid large holes in the crochet fabric, increase tension until the holes cannot be seen, or choose a crochet hook a size down.
  • Use sewing pins to secure limbs of the amigurumi before you sew them.

Amigurumi Little Prince

Head: (in beige yarn, or any skin color you wish)

R (round) 1: sc6 in MR (6 sts)
R2: inc6 (12 sts)
R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18 sts)
R4: (sc2, inc) x6 (24 sts)
R5: (sc3, inc) x6 (30 sts)
R6: (sc4, inc) x6 (36 sts)
R7-14 (8 rounds): sc all around x8 (36 sts)
R15: (sc4, dec) x6 (30 sts)
R16: (sc3, dec) x6 (24 sts)
Begin stuffing. Put 6mm safety eyes roughly in the middle of the head, around R10, with 7 stitches between the eyes.
R17: (sc2, dec) x6 (18 sts)
R18: (sc, dec) x6 (12 sts)
R19: (dec) x6 (6 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving a short tail, and using a needle, thread the yarn through all 6 stitches in the last round. Pull it tight so that the opening closes like a drawstring bag, and then finish off. Sew a little nose with same color yarn one round under the eyes, extending across 2 stitches.

Legs: (in light brown yarn) x2

R1: sc6 in MR (6 sts)
R2: (sc2, inc) x2 (8 sts)
R3: sc all around (8 sts)

Make two identically, but do not cut the yarn on the second leg. Sc7 around the second leg, then sc8 around the first leg, then one last sc back to the second leg to connect the two legs together.

Body: (switch to green yarn)

R1: sc all around (16 sts)
R2: (sc3, inc) x4 (20 sts)
R3-4 (2 rounds): sc all around x2 (20 sts)
R5: (sc3, dec) x4 (16 sts)

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff.

Arms: (start with beige)

R1: sc4 in MR (4 sts)
R2: (sc, inc) x2 (6 sts)
R3: sc all around (6 sts)
switch to green yarn
R4-5 (2 rounds): sc all around x2 (6 sts)

Lightly stuff, using the back of the crochet hook to push fiberfill down.

Hair: (in yellow yarn)

R1: sc6 in MR (6 sts)
R2: inc 6 (12 sts)

There are 12 stitches on the ring. Each stitch is going to have 2 strands of hair, so there are 24 strands total. The longer strands are made of ch10 and then sc9 down the other side, and the shorter strands are made of ch7 and sc6 on the other side.

Make 21 long strands: for each ring stitch, ch10 and sc9 back, then slst into the same stitch on the magic ring, and ch 10 and sc9 back. Between ring stitches, slst into the next one.

Then, fill the last few spaces with 3 short strands: ch7, and sc6 back, slst into next stitch, then ch7 and sc6 back twice into the last ring stitch.

After making the hair, pin it down onto the head and glue in place.

Curve the short strands in the front of the head to make bangs, wait a couple hours until glue dries and then remove pins.

Jacket: (in green yarn)

  • R1: FSC 15 (tutorial here), ch1 and turn (15 sts)
  • R2: sc3, ch2, sc5, ch2, sc3, ch1 and turn (15 sts)
  • R3-7 (5 rounds): sc across, ch1 and turn x5 (15 sts)

Belt: (in red)

FSC 12. Sew belt onto body after jacket is put on body.

Bowtie: (in red)

FSC 3, ch1, turn, FSC 3. Wrap yarn tail around middle tightly to create bowtie effect. Sew onto top of body under head.

Congratulations, you’re finished!
