The Perfect Bag Charm Bear

I’ve designed a few amigurumi bears in the past, all of which vary slightly in their design and body shape. The amazing thing to me about amigurumi is that there can be so many variations in the physical form of an animal, but still recognizably look like that animal!

For this version, I really wanted to create a miniature sized bear, but with an oversized head and separate body (compared to my mini polar bear pattern). I was inspired by some cute cartoon drawings I found online with these proportions, and I couldn’t want to realize them in amigurumi form.

The main reason why I decided on these small proportions was that I wanted this bear to be able to be a constant companion in the form of a bag charm or keychain. All you have to do is add a lobster clasp and hook it through the top to take your bear with you everywhere you go!

I love how the finished proportions look on this tiny bear, and I could definitely see it being scaled up with DK or even worsted weight yarn.

When creating this bear, I also decided that I wanted to add a few small accessories. I’ve been experimenting with this with my Violet doll, and I realized that adding one or two miniature clothing items to any amigurumi is a great touch.

I decided I wanted to give Cinnamon a little tuxedo, and decided to realize that in the form of a cute top hat and mini bowtie.

Fluffy Yarn for a Fluffy Bear

When I designed this teddy bear I knew that I wanted it to be fluffy and fuzzy, so I opted for Wool and the Gang’s Feeling Good Yarn. If you’ve ever touched this yarn before, you know that the yarn is heavenly in how soft it is to touch and feel. It’s 70% baby alpaca, which puts it on the pricey side, but it was the texture that I wanted so I felt that it was worth it.

There are also lots of colors so you can make Cinnamon in any colorway you want! In fact, one of my upcoming projects is a bunny in the same body shape as Cinnamon, but in a pink purple blend.

Technical Notes:

  • Crochet in continuous rounds unless otherwise specified
  • When filling with polyester stuffing, pull apart each large chunk into many smaller chunks. This ensures an even distribution of firmness.
  • To avoid large holes in the crochet fabric, increase tension until the holes cannot be seen, or choose a crochet hook a size down.
  • Stuff the head and the body firmly at the openings so that the neck is stable upon completion.

Body: (in beige yarn)

  • Chain 4.
  • Round 1: beginning in the second chain from hook, sc 6 all around the foundation chain. There will be 2 stitches in each chain stitch. For more information on crocheting around a foundation, see here. (6 sts)
  • R2: BLO inc x6 (12 sts)
  • R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18 sts)
  • R4: (sc2, inc) x6 (24 sts)
  • R5-10 (6 rounds): sc all around (24 sts)
  • Stuff. Cut yarn, leaving a short tail. Invisible finish off.

Head: (in beige yarn)

  • R7: (sc6, inc) x6 (48 sts)
  • R8-15 (8 rounds): sc all around
  • Begin stuffing. For this pattern, I decided to secure safety eyes with glue at the end so that I could figure out the best placement with the beak. However, if you feel strongly about securing the safety eyes with the plastic backing and don’t mind not being able to see the whole picture, then I would recommend putting the safety eyes here, between rounds 13 and 14, 7 stitches apart.

  • R22: (sc, dec) x6 (6 sts)
  • Cut yarn, leaving a short tail. Using a needle, thread the yarn through all 6 stitches in the last round, and pull it tight so the opening closes like a drawstring bag. Finish off. Sew the head to the body.

Assembly

  1. Embroider a triangular nose on the muzzle. Begin from the middle of the nose and outline out a small pie slice shape extending 1 round using vertical stitches. Fill in the outline and make one single horizontal stitch across the top for a cleaner look.
  2. Sew muzzle to head between 13th and 17th rounds from the top.
  3. Place eyes just above the muzzle between the 13th and 14th rounds (from the top), with 7 stitches between them
  4. Sew the ears between the 7th and 9th rounds from the top, off to the left and right.
  5. Sew the head to the body.
  6. Sew the arms between the head and the body to the left and right.
  7. Sew the legs on the body between the 6th and 8th rounds (from the bottom) in the bottom left and right corners.
  8. Sew the hat on top of the bear’s head and the bowtie between the head and body in the front.
