7+ Cute Amigurumi Soot Sprite Crochet Patterns

If you’ve ever watched the Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro films by Studio Ghibli, you’re probably familiar with the cute creatures known as soot sprites, or susuwatari. Since they’re round, fuzzy characters, they’re super easy to crochet! In this round-up, we’ll look at a variety of ways you can make amigurumi soot sprites!

Before we dive in, make sure you have your amigurumi supplies. You’ll need yarn, poly-fil stuffing, safety eyes, and sometimes white felt or other notions. If a pattern calls for specific supplies, I’ll let you know!

1. Soot Sprite Amigurumi

These quick and easy amigurumi sprites are made with simple stitches and fingering-weight yarn, though you can use larger or smaller yarn if you want to make them a different size. You’ll also need beads or safety eyes, craft glue, and black sewing thread.

2. Fluffy Soot Sprite Amigurumi

This sprite is made with standard DK-weight yarn that’s fluffed with a slicker brush once you’re done making the main body. The fun colorful star accents are left as-is, which gives a nice textural variety to the project. Best of all, you’ll only need to know basic stitches for this project.

3. “Fun Fur” Soot Sprite Amigurumi

This soot sprite is made with a special fuzzy yarn called “Fun Fur” by Lion Brand Yarn. It can be a bit hard to see your stitches when using this yarn, so make sure you have some stitch markers on hand! The sprite is made by holding one strand of worsted-weight yarn and two strands of Fun Fur yarn together, and you’ll only need to know easy stitches. Plus, there’s a video tutorial! For this project, make sure you have some white felt on hand.

4. Soot Sprite Amigurumi Crochet

If you prefer not to use felt, this is a similar project that includes a crocheted option for the whites of the eyes. Like the previous pattern, you’ll need both black worsted-weight yarn and black Fun Fur yarn. For the eyes, you’ll need fingering weight white yarn.

5. Amigurumi Soot Sprite Crochet Pillow

Here’s an adorable soot sprite pillow pattern by the same designer as the previous pattern! For this project, you’ll need a round pillow form or Poly-Fil stuffing, Scheepjes Furry Tales yarn in color 980 “The Beast” for the body, and white and black weight 4 yarn for the eyes. This should be a pretty easy project because you’ll only need to know basic stitches.

6. Soot Sprite

This soot sprite is so small and cute! For this project, you’ll need worsted weight yarn, fiber-fill stuffing, white felt, and safety eyes, plus a wire brush to fluff up the project at the end. Best of all, you only need to know basic crochet stitches: chain, single crochet, and the magic ring.

7. Amigurumi Soot Sprite

This is an extra fuzzy soot sprite with long strands of fur! Like some of the other susuwatari in this round-up, it’s made with Lion Brand Fun Fur yarn, but because the sprite is so small, the furry part of the yarn sticks out further. You’ll also need white and black worsted-weight yarn for the eyes, and knowledge of easy stitches.

8. Susuwatari “Soot Sprites”

Last but certainly not least are these fun, fuzzy soot sprites that feature googly eyes! For this project, you’ll need googly eyes and hot glue in addition to Fun Fur yarn, worsted weight yarn, and stuffing. When you start crocheting, make sure to hold the worsted weight yarn and Fun Fur yarn together. My favorite thing about these susuwatari is that you can choose any size of googly eyes—even giant ones like the designer used for one of her sprites!
